The Accidental Housewife: Fancy Pants

May 18th, 2012
My friend Sarah (long time IRL friend, short time Accidental blog discoverer) posted today on people who dress their toddlers in silk.

And that got me thinking…

I took the girls to a concert this morning.

Not as flash as it sounds – Peanut was going with her playschool anyway, so Bug and I tagged along since it was held in the brass band hut on the corner of our street. I’m all about convenience.

Straight afterwards we headed back to the girls’ playschool and playgroup.

I had dressed the kids in their normal play clothes, which in this weather is usually tracksuit pants and some layered t-shirts, under a jumper or jacket.

Now, let me be perfectly honest. These clothes have a patina of wear. Which is a nice way to say the odd stain or rub mark. Not huge ones – just a stray grass mark on the knees, or a bit of discoloration on the neck of a t-shirt that has seen one too many dribbled apples (I’m looking at you, Bug).

I don’t mind this at all. The kids don’t look shabby, just (in my view) appropriately dressed for the activities they do. Activities like painting with stainy paint, or running and skidding on their knees in the black-rubber-topped play ground. Activities like “being kids”.

When they wear clothes that are cheap and easily replaceable I can let them be as active and messy as they choose. They are happy doing what they please, and I am happy that I don’t need to nag them about keeping clean. (Although I do wish Peanut would stop wiping her fingers on her shirt. I’m not *made* of laundry powder, I *make* laundry powder. There’s a difference!)

So, back to the story… At the concert there was a sweet little girl who was dressed in a grey woolen smock dress, red stockings and shiny black patent leather shoes. She looked adorable, and her mother was understandably very proud of what she was wearing. Unfortunately, the mum was so proud she would barely let the kid move. While the other children were dancing (and Bug was dancing so hard she fell over, then kept right on grooving, while lying on the floor) this poor girl was made to dance right beside her mum, and asked to calm down if she got too excited so she wouldn’t scratch her fancy shoes.

Now, I have no idea if the mum was about to head off somewhere more important for the day, and just brought the girl to the concert as a pleasant diversion on the way. (but I suspect not, as Mum was still in her Uggs… but maybe she was dropping her daughter somewhere? I’m not sure.) But I think the mum probably dressed the kid up in her best duds to show her off a bit. And that’s fine, it’s something I’m equally guilty of on numerous occasions.

Still, I was glad I saw that mum and her daughter today, because it reminded me that young children in general don’t care about fancy clothes and all that goes with it, except when it interrupts their essential job of being a kid. (With the notable exception of dress-ups, of course.)

Peanut and Bug are happier and more comfortable in their play clothes, and they arguably learn and experience more too, since they have greater freedom of action.

I know the day may come when the girls prefer to sit pretty dresses rather than play soccer in the playground (not that it ever came for me!) but today was a reminder for me that I should probably (where possible*) try to match their clothing with their world view, instead of inflicting my own agenda. And hopefully, dressing them in practical clothes will lead them to learning practical skills and being practical people.

So, dear readers, what are your views on play clothes? Am I out of line dressing my girls mainly in shabby-not-so-chic? Will my cunning plan backfire?

Braided Neck T-Shirt Redo « Our Little Monkeys

May 18th, 2012

tshirt remakeI saw this tutorial and tried it out tonight.

It probably would have turned out fine if my t-shirt wasn’t a cheap Walmart t-shirt that I got at the end of the summer.  As a result , my braid caused holes and wasn’t as neat as the one in the tutorial.

So I decided to grab a thin, long piece of jersey knit fabric that I had left over from making a skirt and wove it through the holes.

I ended up having to sew it together because the holes were stretching out a bit, but it only took about twenty minutes from start to finish.

I love the way it turned out!

…love Maegan ~ Fashion, DIY, Home, Lifestyle: Easy T-Shirt DIY …

May 15th, 2012

I love a great t-shirt DIY and this one is extremely simple! As shown above, you can wear it two different ways… the first is simply sliced {and reminds me of one of my favorite artists, Lucio Fontana} and the second style, by creating pseudo-bows out of each sliced section. You can choose to wear nothing underneath or wear an alternating colored t-shirt or tank top to show through. A lace tank would be really pretty as well… and a little 80′s Madonna-esque.

What You’ll Need…

* A crew neck t-shirt. I went with a more fitted T but it would also work well on an oversized shirt.
* Scissors
* Lace or trim {optional}
* Needle/Thread

Steps…

* Carefully cut out your “crew neck”.

* Flip your shirt over and lay it flat. I eyeballed mine but I basically created about 3″ sections that extended a little bit beyond each of my shoulder blades, or about 2-1/2inches from the side seams.

* You can measure it out, or if you have a steady hand, carefully cut 4 straight and parallel lines or slits down your back.

NOTE: To get your cut edges to curl a little, use your hands to carefully stretch out your slits.

Wear it like this…

or create “bows” down the back…

* Depending on the number of sections you have, cut 1-1/2″ sections of your lace or trim. You can also use the leftover “neck” you removed earlier. I had 5 sections.

* Wrap your trim around the center of your section, creating a bow, overlap the edges and hand stitch it together. ** Do NOT stitch it to your shirt.

And wear it like this…

A white T with a pop of different hued neon trim down the back would be the sort of of the moment trend and a fun option for Summer… but a nautical themed version would be adorable too!

Have Fun!

Trendy Plus Size Clothing | Bebo Tags

May 15th, 2012

Tired of your friends making a mocking your size? Bored of being told that it is time you shed a few pounds? Worried that your vital stats do not match up to a prototype? Sometimes no matter how much you exercise, it is impossible to get rid of fat and attain a certain figure. In such situations, you need some fashion advice, to make the most of those voluptuous curves.

Being a size plus than your contemporaries, does not mean you need to hide those curves. Knowing your shape, understanding it and shopping right to make it look right is all that you need to do. So, stop worrying about being a size zero, as it is no answer to looking beautiful. Revamp your wardrobe and check of these fashion tips which will come in handy the next time you go shopping.

For Women

Dresses
For the plus size women who are tall enough to carry a dress, focus on accentuating the curves. A low waistline, which creates the illusion of good figure or an open neckline, can make the look very appealing. Avoid shiny materials but add the blings in moderate with accessories. Avoid wearing stripes in any form as they make you look twice your size. If you are doing a wardrobe for the summer, pastels are a must have. Dresses with pastel shades are perfect for a lazy Sunday brunch and a night dinner party. Try to keep the length of the dresses just till the knee, to make your legs look longer than they actually are.

V-Necks
T-shirts with closed neckline can make you look bustier, than you actually are. Instead opt for V-neck t-shirts, which bring attention to a thinner neck and well board shoulders. Such t-shirts, highlight your face as well. Scoop neck t-shirts are an alternative for those who aren’t comfortable with v-necks. Don’t be afraid to sport bold colors, while shopping for V-neck t-shirts.

Casual Wear
Plus size bodies love the empire waist line. It conveniently hides the belly fat and emphasizes your waistline, creating an illusion of an hourglass figure. An empire waistline dress or a top with tiny prints are a great outfit for a weekend outings. Team them up with a pair of denim or skirt to complete the trendy look.

Sweaters
If you are living in a cold region, then make the most of it by using the weather to your advantage. Sweaters make any body type look good. V-neck sweaters, cardigans, pullovers with three fourth sleeves, sweater dresses, vertical line along the middle to give an illusion of a lean body.

Pants
Plus size women with heavy hips must avoid wearing tapered pants as they make your hips look bigger. The straight fit on the contrary gives the body a tall look, bringing out the hidden height.

For Men

Shirts
Vertical stripes look great on plus sized men as it makes the length of the torso look longer. Avoid layering when you wear shirts, as it adds to the size. Also, buy the size that fits you correctly as baggy shirts make you look thinner is only a myth!

T-shirts
V-necks or round necks are a good option. These necklines draw attention to your neck. So, even if you have a double chin, it slims down the whole look.

Pants
For casual wear, look out for the dark corduroys with slim stripes. Pinstripe pants and plain pants with a hint of self design look fabulous for office wear. Team them up with plain shirts to complete the formal look.

So what if you weigh a little more than normal. Dressing up the right way, will help you build your confidence and it will make you feel better. Cherish those curves as there are many who many would kill for them! After all, the more you weigh, the more there is to love of you!http://www.buzzle.com/
